CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid made by the hemp plant. It has exactly the same chemical formula as THC, C21H30O2, but its atoms are arranged differently, and that difference is why CBD is non-intoxicating. The World Health Organization's 2018 review concluded that "in humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential." In a CBD product, you'll find it measured in milligrams per serving, with a lab report showing what's actually in the batch.

CBD and THC: same formula, different molecule
PubChem, the U.S. National Library of Medicine's chemistry database, lists CBD and delta-9 THC with the same formula (C21H30O2) and the same molecular weight (314.5 g/mol). Chemists call compounds like this isomers: same atoms, different arrangement.
The arrangement is what matters. In THC, one of the rings is closed. In CBD, that ring is open. That difference changes how each molecule behaves, which is why THC is intoxicating and CBD isn't. It also explains why the two travel together during extraction and why a lab has to separate and measure them individually.

Where CBD comes from
The hemp plant doesn't make much CBD directly. It makes cannabidiolic acid (CBDA). Heat removes a carbon dioxide group from CBDA, a step called decarboxylation, and what's left is CBD. Manufacturers extract the cannabinoids from dried hemp, then heat and refine the extract into a concentrate. Depending on how it's processed, that concentrate becomes one of three ingredients:
- Full Spectrum keeps a range of hemp cannabinoids and terpenes, including a small amount of delta-9 THC.
- Broad Spectrum keeps a range of cannabinoids and terpenes but has the THC removed to undetectable levels.
- Isolate is CBD on its own, with the other plant compounds removed.
Every Canna River product is made with either Full Spectrum or Broad Spectrum hemp extract. Neither one is an isolate.
Is CBD legal?
U.S. federal law (7 U.S.C. 1639o) defines hemp by its THC content, not its CBD content. That definition is changing. Under the current definition, hemp is cannabis with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry-weight basis. A 2025 law (P.L. 119-37), with start dates later set by a 2026 continuing resolution (P.L. 119-103), makes two changes:
- November 12, 2026: products containing cannabinoids the cannabis plant can't make naturally lose hemp status.
- December 11, 2026: the 0.3% limit applies to total THC (including THCA), not only delta-9, and finished hemp-derived cannabinoid products are capped at 0.4 mg of total THC per container.
Neither change sets a limit on CBD. Bills to delay or replace the new definition are pending in Congress, so check the current rules, and your state's, before you order. Internationally, the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence recommended in 2018 that pure CBD not be placed under international drug control.
How to read a CBD label
Two numbers tell you most of what you need: how much CBD is in the whole container, and how much is in one serving. Here's how they look on Canna River's core products:

Beyond the numbers, check three things:
- Full Spectrum or Broad Spectrum. Full Spectrum contains delta-9 THC. Canna River's Full Spectrum Classic Tincture, for example, lists 2 mg of delta-9 THC per mL. Broad Spectrum is formulated to contain undetectable THC.
- The ingredient list. It tells you the carrier, sweetener and flavoring alongside the hemp extract.
- A lab report for your batch. A certificate of analysis (COA) from an independent lab shows the cannabinoid content and screens for contaminants. Canna River publishes its reports in the COA library, organized by product.
Frequently asked questions
Does CBD get you high?
No. CBD is non-intoxicating. The WHO's 2018 review found no effects in people indicating abuse or dependence potential. Full Spectrum products do contain small amounts of delta-9 THC, so read the label for the THC per serving.
Is CBD the same as hemp oil?
Not necessarily. "Hemp oil" can mean an extract of the whole plant, which contains CBD, or hemp seed oil, which is pressed from the seeds and contains little or no CBD. Look for a milligram amount of CBD on the label and a lab report to back it up.
Is CBD the same as THC?
No. They share a chemical formula but have different structures. THC is intoxicating, and the federal hemp definition caps it. CBD is non-intoxicating, and the definition sets no limit on it.
Can CBD make me fail a drug test?
Possibly. Drug tests look for THC, not CBD. Canna River's FAQ says Full Spectrum products contain legal trace amounts of delta-9 THC and should be expected to trigger a positive result. Broad Spectrum products are formulated to contain undetectable THC, but they aren't isolate, and a positive result is still possible, especially with regular use.
What's the difference between CBD and CBDA?
CBDA is the acid form the plant actually makes. Heating it removes a carbon dioxide group and turns it into CBD. Most CBD products are made from heated, refined extract, so their labels list CBD.
How do I know how much CBD is in a product?
Check the milligrams per serving on the label, then compare it with the cannabinoid results on the batch's certificate of analysis from an independent lab.
